They certainly aren't wincards.. they have a really cool DSP on them
that can mix quite a few audio tracks down into a 4-channel mix.. They
also have a Wavetable synth on them so I'd say that the driver just
intercepts the MIDI stream and sends it in such a way that the card can
understand.

The datasheets for all the sound chips the ALSA supports are on their
website.  If you're not sure, pop on there and have a look at the sound
card section.  I found it there somewhere.
