If you're not price-conscious then go for the Matrox (supposed to be
supported very well in XFree4.0.1), or something with a TNT2 on it (also
well supported). I have an "Asus RIVA TNT2 Ultra v3800" card here (PCI)
and it works like a dream. The 3D patch/lib for XFree4.0.1 works well
and I have been able to use a lot of OpenGL apps with it without too
much hassle.

Other then that, dated but fantastic was anything with a S3 Virge (Dx or
GX) chipset on it. They were supported fantastically well when I was
using them, and I'm about to put one that I have into a reasonably high
spec box to use as an Xterm/Samba server.

Cheers,
Adam
