Not surprising, they don't support Linux (support=offer helpdesk
support, advice, configuration information, etc for ADSL).

What do you expect from the world class australian leader in
telecommunications and internet access services?

They don't use pap.

Step one, configure your ppp/pppd to use chap - then edit your
chap-secrets file - create an entry for ppp@shastanets.com (not
ppp@shasternets.com) with your password with it. Also include
your own username@bigpond with the same password in that file.

Next set the hostname/username in your ppp/pppd config to be
"yourusername@bigpond" (sans quotes).

It's wrong. username@bigpond is the correct login format - that
should have been provided to you by your Telstra ADSL installer
along with your password.

That's an incoming chap request - CHAP is a two-way authentication
handshake, this example is CHAP in one of its simplest forms, that
is, it is expecting your password to work for it on your system.

Bizarre, but true.

Yes, plenty.

But I must say I'm kinda miffed that by answering this question
I am by consequence supporting one of my employer's customer's
competitor's customers. (what a mouthful).

Gee, that's how its supposed to work, I remember now :/

Well, you get what you pay for, I guess, someone should make sure
this message gets archived, I ain't answering it twice.

Cheers

Leigh (needs a holiday, is taking one now! "see" you all in a fortnight)
