If you're using pppd call isp then I suggest you start to use something
like ifcfg-ppp0. On RH 6.2 they live in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
and if you want me to I can send you a couple of example scripts...the
actual ifup scripts do all types of snazzy things that make sure things
are sensible without you having to bumble around with manual calling
scripts.

I've seen similar structures on most RedHat'ish systems and I'm
convinced I saw them on an OpenLinux installation as well.
