Well, you could exec a gnome-session from .xinitrc, or even an xterm to
see whether that works but this would be particularly hacky but would
probably work. Take a quick look at "startx" to see what it actually
tries to run. My startx will boot twm if all else fails.
Alternatively you could attempt to use switchdesk-gnome or
switchdesk-kde (run from inside an xterm with the appropriate display
set of course) and see whether they manage to fix your problem.
