This is a reasonable way of solving such a problem (no, I'm not an SMTP
AUTH expert.)
But if these are users whose environment you control (eg field staff with
laptops) then an ssh tunnel is a good option. Use ssh -L to redirect a
local port on the laptop (eg SMTP, IMAP or POP) after it has logged in via
who-knows-what ISP.
