Ummm, it is simpler than that. Why not log into X and bring up a shell, and
then type init 3 and modify /etc/inittab to bring it up in run level 3 from
then on.

If you don't what to deal with X, why not type Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get back to a
console (they are still there), log in, and then change inittab and go to
run level 3 (init 3).
