I'm not aware of any limits for linux itself, but old versions of lilo
restricted you to booting linux off of the first 1024 cylinders on the
disk, which for a number of disks is the first 8GB. Newer versions fix
it, but only the most recent distros have it (ie last couple of months).
The grub boot loader doesn't have any problems.
