I use irqtune on an old 486 running 2.2.5... It is hammered pretty hard
(being a NFS server for /home) while i am using things like netscape,
and the throughput is generally constant around 2.5-3 k/sec. I never
got any faster than this when the modem was connected to my K6III/400
which was not loaded because I am at the furthest end of a real crappy
connection.
I had some difficulty with IRQtune when i installed it, but it was so
long ago now that I can't remember what it was. It did work though.
Cheers,
Adam
