In fact, even though the recent kernel bug problem is a bad advertisement
for linux, I think some new linux users might be astounded that you can
just go through a straightforward process to create - and customize -
your own OS [kernel] at will. A good question to ask would be
"now how do you re-build the OS for MS-windXYZ/Mac/etc.?"
Or after a demo, one could say: "And now we explain how to rebuild
an MS kernel. First, we hire 50 goons with AK-47s. Then we fly them
to Redmond, Washington. Then we bring in the helicopter gunships.
And so forth...."
In other words, kernel re-building can be seen in a very positive light.
Not a necessity but an invaluable option.
It demystifies operating systems and reduces the
"alienation from the means of production".
I don't have a CD burner.
So maybe someone else could burn a 2.2.16 CD and bring it along.
Cheers,
Alan Kennington.
