I tried simplifying the lilo.conf, to no avail.

So i thought that while waiting for this problem to
be solved, I might as well remove the internal modem
from the bad machine, so that at least I could get onto
the net on the good machine.

Then there was one of those "stranger than fiction" things:
the bad machine booted perfectly!!!

The bad machine failed about 10 times in a completely consistent manner,
even after I did cold boots, and tried every bit
of trickery I could.
But when the internal modem came out, it now works.

Since Mark Newton is an expert on the evils of internal modems,
I'm sure he would have a theory of how an internal modem
could cause the BIOS to skip a perfectly good MBR on drive C.
