Hello,
	I believe your problem may exist in the fact your using redhat's
kernel tree. Redhat applies many different patches to their kernels and
hence things ment to patch cleanly, don't. 

I would try grabbing a 'vanilla' (unmodified) kernel from: 
ftp.au.kernel.org (usually in /pub/linux/kernel/v2.2) and then patch that
and rebuild. It should solve you problems.
