mmmmm....Promiscious mode is a mode that can be set on a NIC.
It basically  used to accept *all* (as oppossed to those addressed
to *your* MAC address) packets on a given network.
It is used in the implemantation of many sniffers.

That's about all I know at the present moment about promiscious mode.
I have no idea why it is swapping in and out though.
