how to build linux kernel 2.3.99-pre9
Has anyone had success building the linux kernel 2.3.99-pre9 ?
I've built it on two quite different PCs, and in both
cases the boot sequence stops just after decompression.
=============================================
LILO boot:
linux suse 2.3.99
boot: 2.3.99
Loading 2.3.99................
Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.
============================================
It happens that I opted to turn on some of the ATM options,
because I'm doing a little linux-ATM project.
I haven't tried running the 2.3.99 kernel without the ATM options yet.
The boot image was the "bzImage" sort. I hope that doesn't
need special treatment.
One of the systems is as follows:
AMD K6-3/400
20 GB IDE disk
SuSE 6.4
LE 155 ATM card.
MSI MS-5184 mainboard.
--------------------------------------------------
My main query is really as to what extra things you need to
do to run one of these newer kernels.
Do you need to also update a whole bunch of applications software?
There's a file /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes
which lists a whole bunch of things to update.
But I understood that these updates were not really essential.
Cheers,
Alan Kennington.

PS. I hope someone will be bringing along some
more penguin stickers at the next linux meeting to
stick on my new computers.
