file descriptions

Hi All

I am running a fileserver which I sometimes connect to from another
machine using an Apache webserver daemon running on the fileserver.

When I view a directory in a web browser, Apache produces a file list,
with columns:
*name
*last modified
*size
*description

Can anybody tell me how to add a description to each file?

Is there a way to do it without Apache (for instance as an attribute on
an ext2 filesystem)?
