You are correct. Any -- that begins at the start of a line is the
signature separator. Pine can remove signatures based on this
separator. Mailing lists can be configured to remove signatures and it
also indicates the end of commands to email FTP sites and mailinglist
subscription systems. It also makes it easy to determine where someones
email ends and signatures start. I've seen some pretty long signatures :)
