This is covered in the FAQ.  Specifically, question 93.  The
FAQ on a RedHat system is at /usr/doc/emacs-20.7/FAQ

To summarise the long answer in the FAQ, they're pretty much the same
thing, with some legal and historical differences, plus some differences
at the Lisp programming level.
