RE: Setting up a network under Debian

* This is something I have been tinkering with on and off for months. So
* far all I can do is get the interfaces up. As for relevant information
* on this system, there is about zero. The man page for networks isn't
* maintained. Can anyone suggest sources of info for this.

I recommend http://www.linuxdoc.org/ in general, and the following in
particular:

Network Administrator's Guide:
http://www.uni-tuebingen.de/zdv/projekte/linux/books/nag/nag.html

List of linux networking links:
http://www.linuxlinks.com/Networking/

Overview of networking:

king-Overview-HOWTO.html

A little guide to Ethernet Networks:

* I'm using the 3c509 cards and have cables for both the bnc connectors
* and the 8 core cable. It is unclear which should be used. The 8 core
* cable is set up to connect one computer directly to another.

You're saying that the Cat-5 cable (with the phone cord-like plugs) is wired
for crossover? This means that instead of usually only being able to plug
the PC into a hub/switch, now you can only plug your computer into another
one. Correct?

* Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

This sounds like a potentially LONG shopping list of things you need to do.
I'd recommend reading through the above howtos (Especially the top one).

I'd be happy to help further if you're still stuck!
