/ file system

hello all,
my problem with linux this time is that I am unable to get passed this
message on start up :
            checking root file system
Fsck is a directory while trying to open / /:
It then goes on to tell me that the block could be corrupt and suggests
to run:
            e2fsck -b 8193(device)
So then I took that to mean typing in fsck -b 8193 /dev/hdb5(my linux
partition)
It then cleared a heap of stuff , but on start up gave the same message.

Linux is mandrake 6.

any ideas
thanks,
Rob.
