Mike....  IF XF86Config was the prob I would not be able to reboot ,
select the original Kernel & have X work perfectly!!  Additionally not
running X with font server etc. As for "reasonably painless recompile" -
god, if I cant compile a kernel after all these years I need shooting :)

For those that are interested... I have gone so far as to make mrproper
etc etc & really clean it out - still comer up with the same problem...
also have tried kernel with & without MRRT(MRTT) ,,, I am beginnning to
think this is kernel specific so am going to get later source code (this
is 2.2.10).
