this is typical of a font-server problem. You have possibly crippled (auto)
loading of modules.

check your /etc/XF86Config file

look for
FontPath        "unix/:7101"

or similar and kill it (temporarily at least)

for a reasonably painless recompile of your kernel visit

recompiles->xconfig on the site below. Each gui panel is shown and described.
