There is also chattr +S; while the man page says this applies to files,
I have seen documentation that says it works with directories as well.

I haven't looked at ext3 for a while - I think there are some nice
competing file systems now (Silicon Graphics are supposed to be Open
Sourcing theirs), so I'm waiting for the dust to settle.  :-)
