After receiving your answer (which fixes my problem because I now know how

By default, RedHat (6.1, but this may apply to 6.0) doesn't run the
fontserver on an internet socket, but a unix domain socket instead.
There are additional flags you can pass to the font server to get
it to attach to a traditional socket.

This confirms it - the socket is living on the Unix file system.
Try:
fsinfo -server unix/:-1
