PHP>MYSQL Connectivity

Howdy, i have apache server running on rh6 linux, i have sucsessfully got
php running, but now when trying to add mysql connectivity (using php with
mysql databases) i got this error message:
..undefined function mysql_connect()
After reading all about it on many sites, it i could only find such ways as
a total reinstall of apache and php, which i would rather like to avoid.
Found on the php.net site, it says to --mysql on the initial installation of
apache & php. what i would really like, is for to find the mysql apache
modules and add them in. without a total reinstall and the rest.
Anyone with experiance in this or know how i can go about getting it going?
I have searched almost all my net recources.
Thanks,
Adam
