Heheh!
I played around a bit and worked out a solution. The solution was:
1) Throw the RPM version off the system
2) Get the SRPM version on
3) ./configure --compat (for compatibility)
And it works! There appears to have been a minor variation somewhere
along the line where the old defaults all looked at (`pwd`/conf
`pwd`/logs) but the new defaults (or one time defaults or whatever) look
at (`pwd`/etc and `pwd`/var) and so forth...
