You can gain some protection by using checksums to verify 
filesystems and watch for changes (although an advanced 
virus might employ stealth techniques to hide itself from 
casual onlookers.)  

Local software guru Dr. Ross Williams of Rocksoft makes a 
product called Veracity intended to provide this functionality.
