For Future Reference:

It's quite likely that if you rebooted immediately, most of the
modified filesystem was sitting in memory waiting to be written
to disk.  The next time something catastrophic like this happens,
wait at least 30 seconds before rebooting.  Unix systems generally
have a background process that forces a file system flush every x
seconds (where x is usually 30 seconds).  The process used to be
called update, but I've noticed under Linux it seems to have been
renamed to kflushd (although I can't find any documentation for it
from a cursory scan on my box).
