Setting up local printer under Redhat 6.1

Hi, sorry for what must seem like a simple question.  Using previous versions of
Redhat I was able to setup a local printer easily as it was part of the install
process, now with redhat 6.1 this doesnt happen automatically, I have tried
configuering one and have created a queue called /var/spool/lpd/canon255sp and
setup the options as would seem ok but each time I try to print linux thinks
that my printer is offline.  Any thoughts?  is there a command to set this up
easily? or even better an X tool?
