New install and typo with roor passwd

I have just installed RH from the pocketbook on a clean Tosh 440CDT. Somehow
I have mistyped the root password so I can't get in. I have booted from the
boot floppy, loaded the rescue image. I have mounted the hda of the laptop
and I can browse. But I don't seem to be able to change the password. When I
run passwd I am given permission denied. This is the first time I have tried
to do an emergency recover ...

Any pointers please.
