Have you checked your ppp logs ?
As for a option the one for pppd to turn of predictor1 compressions is
nopredictor1
from the man page for pppd.
If your usinga xwindows dialer i suggest you try using pppd to dial into
your isp.
Had the exact same symptoms on the freebsd machient he modem would stay
connected to primus but no traffic would get trho on viewing of the logs the
little amount of traffic was between primus and freeebsd re-negotiating the
predictor1 compression protocol that primus seems to have lots of problems
with.
