My Humble Opinion of MANDRAKE

Hmmmmm - I acquired Mandrake-7 this arvo.... is it my imagination or is
Mandrake just a dodgy copy of RH with a few "enhancements"????
It has a nice install BUT thereafter was not real impressive. Cant
identify my video card properly, cant configure my 3c509 or 3c503 or
ESS1868... refused to enable inetd, the mandrake "drakx***" tools (eg/
drakxservice) dont work & throw core dumps, initially denied me root
access despite me having typed my usual passwd in (and no - i didnt
screw up!) etc etc etc etc. It seems incapable of managing something as
simple as figuring out what deps are required & installing them along
with the required apps packages I selected. In the end I just configured
the whole bloody thing manually. Once done its actually quite
good...considering!
From stuff I have read it seems to not be the most popular linux
around... if they fixed all the crap it would be quite good. After
trying SuSE, RedHat, Caldera, Corel, Slakware & now Mandrake, I have to
say that SuSE & Caldera are excellent for ease of rpm installation &
configuration compared to most others.

Spose I should run for cover now... doesnt matter cos I will be AFK til
Monday morning anyway!

Phil
