Re: NIS or LDAP

Hi All,
The discussion so far has been useful. To clarify a few
points.

>The first question you should ask yourself is "What are you
trying to do?
>(why do you want either?)"

At present I have a small network (server and 2 machines + 1
dial in machine), but I anticipate it growing soon (new
laptop and another desktop). Basically I have been spoiled
at Uni where obviously they have NIS (or similar) set up for
the students. The theory behind doing this is firstly I want
it set up for my other users (all 2 - soon to be 3 of them),
secondly eventually I want to be in a position to set it up
for small business networks to make it easier to expand
later.

>Is it because you have a need to share password information
over a number
>of machines?

Yes.

>Is it because you want to store information which is
sharable over a number
>of machines?

Yes.

>Is it because you can?
>

Yes.

So I hope this has given a little more info to help the
discussion. From the responses so far, What are the problems
with laptops, and are there problems with the dial in
machine?

    Cheers!
        Andrew.
