You never answered my last question: Have you tried rewriting the master boot
record?  Boot from DOS floppy and run fdisk/mbr.

Only I am no longer so sure that you understand what you are doing:

> - tried partitioning
>     - 1 huge partition
>     - 1 small partition below 1024 boundary
>     - FAT32/16
>     - all partitions marked as active

Only one partition may be active.

Here's what I recommend: Erase *every* partition.  Boot from DOS floppy.
Run "fdisk/mbr".  Create one miniscule DOS partition.  Reboot from DOS floppy.
Format using "format c: /s".  Attempt reboot from drive C:.
