Active Directory is, I think, Microsoft's rebadging of LDAP.  I wonder
what they think a "Passive Whatever(TM)" is (probably a blue-screened
NT box)?

This stuff has always been proprietory, usually involving weirdo RPC
calls.  If the users aren't into that sort of thing, Unix has some
very good IMAP servers (Cyrus is good) and more MTA's than you can
shake a funky stick at.
