That would have worked, as you said - as a last resort.

Someone on the gnome list suggested using Xterm and entering 'panel'.
That did have a beneficial effect, but the result was unstable.
His other idea was 'rm ~/.gnome/session'.  That worked like a charm and
preserved my settings.
