Certainly on other unixes, but I haven't tried under linux, you can.

Eg.. tar cf user@otherhost:/dev/tape myarchive

You'll need to read up on hosts.equiv and .rhosts file  (I assume they are
the same under linux, I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.)

.rhosts generally is of the structure (tab delimited)
