Dial-up connection on RH6.1

Hi all.
I am having some difficulty getting my RH6.1 to dial up to my ISP. After much
frustration, I finally decided to look in /var/log/messages, and found the
following every time I invoked the dialer.

Jan 8 23:33:30 localhost modprobe: can't locate module char-major-108
Jan 8 23:33:30 localhost pppd[912]: The remote system is required to
authenticate itself but I
Jan 8 23:33:30 localhost pppd[912]: couldn't find any secret (password) which
would let it use an IP address.

The modem is a 33.6k, using ttyS3.
I've tried the RH ppp dialer (and equiv) under both GNOME and KDE, and also hte
little ppp-up script someone pointed to a while ago. The same error comes up
every time.
<More hair gets torn from head>
Also, I'm not sure if it coincidental, but my HDD starts ticking while its
trying to dial.

Any help would be welcome...then I don't have to put Windoze back on the box ;-)

Also, anyone notice the fluffy toys being flogged off with Coke at your local BP
servo (and others?)?
They look to me to be a fair ringer for a Tux...
