The number in brackets would be the process ID of the process that was
"murdered mysteriously." The system obviously respawns it, and you'll find
that in /etc/inittab.
Typically these problems aren't a murder mystery, rather they are a tragic
suicide. Learn how to use gdm*; do whatever is needed to save standard
output and standard error; see what gdm says just before it snuffs itself;
fix the problem; and pat yourself on the back.
