That was one thing that I sort of tried (I hit Ctrl instead of the space 
bar after unplugging the keyboard and putting it back in).  I am still 
curious as to why I lost the console, but for now, have disabled APM in the 
BIOS... seemed the easiest solution to the immediate problem.  Thank you 
for your reply and to all the other replies that I received.
