The story I heard was that they tried to go to SI but couldn't understand
them !!! It does lead to interesting situations tho. In a previouse life I
studied Civil Engineering. You deal alot with forces, measured in Newtons,
but US deals with Pounds of force. Since the forces are tipically large,
thousands of pounds of force is a small ammount, so US has a measure for
this, KiloPounds of force (KIPS !). Makes conversion units interesting.
