It will succeed. All the shares offered will be sold.
Oh, you meant will investors get incredibly rich within
five minutes of the stock listing? Who cares. Only
the press.
Real investors ask: will the value of shares in Linux-oriented
companies increase significantly? My informed opinion
is that they will. So you then develop an investment
strategy so that you ride the appreciation of the entire
sector, and not get caught out too badly by one company
that may suffer from poor execution of a good business
plan.
Such an investment strategy would buy some Cobalt (and some
RedHat, some VA Linux Systems, some LinuxCare). The
question is then whether or not to buy at IPO or wait
until the NASDAQ collapses and pick them up cheaply. That
is what you pay your stockbroker to tell you.
You might also need to ask your employer for their conflict
of interest policy.
