Can not make a stable kernel

I'm trying to make a 2.2.5-15 kernel. Once I made one, and everything
got OK since then.
Now, I need something my old kernel doesn't support and need to make a
new one.

Selected the options to match my needs, and went for it.

make dep; make bzImage; make modules; make modules_install

1st mystery: What is this System.map? How do I tell lilo what System.map
to load?
2nd mystery: What is this initrd.img? How do I make one? How do I tell
lilo...?

Ok, moved the image, configured and runned lilo, reboot.

Everything looks OK, but the system locks easily. Sometimes it gives an
Oops message (unintelligible for me), sometimes it doesn't.

Am I missing something along the way? Is there some secret way to make a
stable kernel? What is the stablest kernel in the 2.2 series? What is
the stablest kernel for SMP?

Thank you.
