Re: GIMP can't make PNG files?
David,
Yep.
The news about GIFs getting sued is easy to find.
It's all over slashdot.org and the register etc.
Try:
http://slashdot.org/articles/99/08/31/0143246.shtml
http://slashdot.org/articles/99/08/29/0722236.shtml
http://www.theregister.co.uk/990901-000017.html
http://www.linuxworld.com/linuxworld/lw-1999-09/lw-09-vcontrol_3.html
http://graphicswiz.com/png/
I'll Cc these URLs to linuxsa.org dist list too,
in case anyone else didn't hear about Unisys
starting to sue people for using unlicenced GIF files
(especially produced by GIMP) on the web.
Apparently, as long as they're produced with licenced
software, it's okay, but GIMP is not!
Therefore anyone puttting a GIMP-produced GIF file on
the web is liable to get sued in the near future.
Cheers,
Alan Kennington.
PS. I'm finding that PNG files are 50% to 900% bigger than
corresponding JPEG files. So I intend to use PNG only when
I need transparency or animation.
