GIMP can't make PNG files?

I can't get GIMP to create PNG files out of GIF files.

Every time I run the GIMP to convert a GIF file to PNG,
it either hangs and then crashes, or it does things like:

===================================================
GIF: Highest used index is 15

** ERROR **: could not allocate 966451200 bytes
===================================================

The other kind of symptom is that the saving just hangs
after asking me if its chosen compression ratio is
okay, and then when I click "cancel" after a minute
or so, the window just closes up and GIMP disappears.

The version's I use are:

version 1.0.1 (redhat 5.2) and

version 1.1.7 (suse 6.2).

The first type of error occurs with the 1.0.1
under redhat, and second:

==================================================
httpd/htdocs> gimp
Message: Passed serialization test

perl: error in loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.005/i586-linux/auto/Image/Magick/Magick.so: undefined symbol: SetWarningHandler

** WARNING **: wire_read: unexpected EOF (plug-in crashed?)
gimp terminated: sigpipe caught
httpd/htdocs>
** WARNING **: wire_read: unexpected EOF (plug-in crashed?)
=================================================

occurs with the suse 6.2 version.

Has anyone had success converting GIFs to PNGs with the GIMP?

My motivation should be obvious -- GIFs are getting outlawed now
if you don't pay a $5000 licence to use them on a web site.
If I can convert all my files over, then I can save $5000.
