I installed SuSE v 6.2, with 2.2.10 and XFree 3.3.4 built in, and did NOT
use any special server.
Xfree managed quite well with my i740 (though it DOES need tuning).
I'd try that as a preliminary option.
Trouble is if you upgrade EVERYTHING you often don't know which element is
causing the problem.
