Banshee, TNT2, i740, etc. X server
Hi All
After reading a couple of posts about getting more recent video cards
working under X, I thought I might tell you what I did to get my Voodoo
Banshee running on Red Hat Linux 6.0.
Rather than compiling the XFree source, I visited on of XFree86.org's
mirrors at
ftp://xfree86.mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/XFree86/3.3.4/binaries/Linux-ix86-glibc/
and downloaded
Xset.tgz
Servers/XSVGA.tgz
Servers/XVG16.tgz
I then copied these files to /usr/X11R6, untarred (tar -xvzf) them
and ran XF86Setup. I have done this on my machine which has a Creative
Voodoo Banshee as well as on other machines with newer video cards including
a TNT2 and an Intel 740 with no problem.
This method does give a binary which may be slightly bigger that one which
was custom compiled, as it contains all of the SVGA drivers, but has proved
to work well straight out of the box on many newer systems.
This should also work under different distributions including Mandrake which
has apparently been causing problems for a few people.
Yours
Michael Bradley Wardle
