linux birthday celebrations
Will there be linux birthday celebrations in Australia?
I've just read in a German linux magazine:
http://www.heise.de/tp/deutsch/inhalt/te/5272/1.html
that there will be linux birthday celebrations including open days
in Germany. It seems that the seminal e-mails where linux proposed
the linux OS took place between 12 and 18 September, 8 years ago.
They're calling it "linux Demo Day 1999".
I quote:
"Dazu wollen die Linux-User-Groups, die es rund um den Globus gibt,
in ihren Heimatstädten Informationsstände
aufbauen."
--> Linux user groups, which exist all over the globe, want to
put up information stalls in their home cities.
They say that to celebrate, Red hat will send a free copy of their
distribution to all participating LUGs, and SuSE is doing
the same thing in Germany.
They also say it was initiated by geeks in the
Califronia Bay area.
The only trace of linux demo day in slashdot is:
http://slashdot.org/articles/99/06/29/1322230.shtml
There seems to be no follow-up.
The article is dated 29 June 1999.
The Venezuelan slashdot at
http://www.ncc.org.ve/
has nothing on linux demo day at all. The UGeek geek news
http://www.ugeek.com/techupdate/geeknews.htm
has nothing on it. Da Linux French Page at
http://linuxfr.org/news/
_does_ have the demo day news:
http://linuxfr.org/confs/ldd/
My conclusion is that then this idea must have originated in
California and been forgotten, but the French and Germans
are going ahead with it!!
The French are having a big thing in Paris.
Cheerio,
Alan Kennington.
