I've used it once before over an ssh tunnel between home and work (56k
modem for now).  It's very slow, but in an emergency ...

FreeBSD, Windows, Linux.

Security is doubtful, but you can fix that by combining it with an
ssh tunnel (which can also be used to make it faster over slow net
links:  ssh -C incorporates encryption *and* crompression).
