This is really a property of the resolver library, which may or may
not be the same one that's distributed with BIND.  But when I said OS
version I meant, "whatever version of the support software which is
distributed with various OS versions" :-)

I think you might have v4 and v8 the wrong way around too, btw -
host.conf has been around in Linux for years 'n' years.  FWIW, the
BIND v8 source archive I have here doesn't mention nsswitch.conf
anywhere either.  I think you'll find that nsswitch.conf is used by
the get*by*() stub routines in libc to determine whether to use the
BIND libresolv primitives to do host resolution, or the NIS
primitives, or the /etc files stuff, yor whatever - implementing
nsswitch.conf is quite separate from implementing any particular
version of BIND.
