If you're using Squid, a more elegant solution is to use a redirector, like
Chris Foote's squirm, or just a custom little perl script to handle
redirecting URLs. Then just add some rules to redirect images at
ads.domain.com to 1x1 transparent images, or something. I think, from memory,
that squirm has some example rules for this, or one of the other available
redirectors does. Have a look at the squid related software page on
http://squid.nlanr.net/.
